Yes, it was a lady who created the famous and the much adored Fail Whale, the image used by Twitter to pacify its users during its downtime. Apparently Twitter got the image from istockphoto.com and the creator Yiying Lu was not even aware that Twitter had started using it.
Yiying Lu (whose name means “Yi” (pronounced “yee”), means Happy; “Ying” (pronounced “ying”), means “creative.” ) had in fact made the original, named “Lifting Up a Dreamer” as a birthday e-card for her friends overseas. Here are some interesting facts about the Fail Whale;
- Did you know that Yiying Lu drew a whale as a ‘quaint and funny’ response to the fact that she was living in South Wales?
- Did you know that the background colour is turquoise, as she was born in December and Turquoise is her birthday stone?
- The shape of the sea waves were inspired by the blade of a bread knife.
Yiying Lu who was born and raised in Shanghai China, graduated from a selective technology high school in Shanghai after which she studied art and design from University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia at and University of Technology Sydney. She also studied advertising and Illustration at Central St Martins College of Art and Design in London, England.
Though Twitter founder Biz Stone got the Fail Whale from i stockphoto, he was nice enough to contact Yiying Lu later to get the rights for the Fowl Owl (denoting account suspended in Twitter) Yiying Lu, whose website features amazing designs including the recently much raved Yes Vegas campaign, has received several awards and recognition for her highly innovative designs.
She is the Co-Founder & Creative Director of WALLS 360, Inc a creative and design firm based out of Las Vegas.
