Google Doodle on Labor day salutes the Working Woman

The Google Doodle celebrating Labour Day for 2012  is a remarkable shift from its past doodles that came out as part of the International Labour Day commemoration. Barring a few countries, including US, the rest of the world considers May 1st of every year as Labor Day, commemorating the economic and social achievements of workers across the world. It is also an occasion to celebrate the the fruits of the labor-day movement or the eight-hour day movement that demanded 8 hours of work, 8 hours of recreation and 8 hours of rest for every working individual on the planet.

The Google Doodle for 2012 labor day depicts a Woman Worker lifing up the metal struts of a framework that has the Google Logo, with her Tool box right by her side. It is a remarkable transition from the ‘obvious’ representations that Google followed in depicting the Day in earlier years.

The ones from 2010 and 2011 had illustrations of visual elements that constitute machinery and mechanical labor, evoking images that one associates with work – machinery and factories.You could view this presently on google.ru, google.co.hk, google.com.bh and google.ph home pages. Interestingly, the Indian homepage, home to the biggest democracy and labor work force, and one of the first nations to recognise and uphold the rights of the workers seems to have been given a miss.

The 2012 for the first time has put a Face to the celebration, and surprisingly it is The Woman, revalidating the growing importance of Women’s participation and contribution which are becoming significant accelerators of economic growth across nations.
